Welcome to the San Francisco Smart City App Hack!
As part of the Startup in Residence program, the San Francisco Smart City App Hack brought together startups and City departments to explore innovative approaches to civic issues in order to lower costs, increase efficiency, and enhance communities. Six teams of City staff and startups worked collaboratively for four months to prototype and test solutions to challenges such as tracking neighborhood air quality, sending emergency notifications, and providing airport navigation for the blind and visually impaired.
While San Francisco is an international hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, the nascent government technology ecosystem is missing one critical element – insight into pain points of the government customer and an understanding of government mechanics. The Startup in Residence model bridges this gap by connecting public-sector staff directly with entrepreneurs to seed problem discovery and product development. Government has the potential to support a large ecosystem of best-of-breed solutions helping catalyze public sector innovation and productivity.
The solutions developed by the startups for the Smart City App Hack touch upon many themes and challenges of everyday life in the city such as:
